What is Composting?
Composting is a biological stabilization technique that uses a combination of microorganisms and macro-organisms, including bacteria, yeast, fungus, earthworms, ants and fruit flies, to biodegrade organic matter such as food and yard waste into useable nutrient-rich fertilizer for plants and trees.
Common Types of Composting Bins
Compost bins provide a controlled environment for the decomposition of waste. These bins are typically square- or cylinder-shaped and can be made of wire, weather-resistant wood or hard plastic materials like recycled polyurethane.
Drum composting uses drums or tumblers to save space and combine organic waste matter more easily. In a compost tumbler, the drums remain closed. This is an effective way to keep pests at bay while preventing the escape of the foul odors that accompany biodegradation of organic materials.
Drum composting also enables you to add organic waste materials to the open end of the drum. Once this is done, the contents are saturated with water and left to sit for at least six weeks. After that time, the contents are mixed by hand or by turning a crank shaft. The mixing process also lets air get at the compost materials. Tumbler composting makes less of a mess than other methods, and the entire process can take up to 14 weeks to complete.

A compost aerator stirs and mixes waste matter better than other methods, and allows plenty of air to circulate; this prevents the compost materials from getting ruined.
